Dear Friends,
Since the decision at the Methodist Conference in the summer to make it possible for same sex couples to marry on Methodist premises some people are understandably wondering what the next steps are in our church. In recent weeks some guidance has been produced about handling this in the local congregation.
The discussion which we held about the report ‘God in love unites us,’ was held in a safe environment, created to allow free and open sharing of quite diverse and deeply held views. This was important then and will be important when and if we move towards a decision for our church.
Thus the leadership team in the church will look at the most appropriate way that we can handle this.
The most important point to make is that there is no pressure to do this. If we had lots of requests for same sex marriages things might be different, but that is not the case. So we can take our time, consider the carefully produced guidance, and learn from the experience of others.
It is also important to remember that the church does not need to make any decision if that is felt the appropriate course of action at this stage.
I am confident that we can find a safe and appropriate way to look at handling this in the most open and sensitive way possible in which very diverse views can be shared and heard. In the offered guidance is a very important step which is that of an indicative vote in which the Church council has to decide if at this time we do or do not wish to register/make available premises for same sex marriage. This allows for open exploration as to whether this is the time to look at making a decision or not, or whether more time is needed.
I hope this may help to alleviate any anxieties felt over this part of our life together. Do please ask if you have further questions. I am sure we can find the wisdom, grace and patience to find the appropriate way forward for us at this time.
Peace Tim
