Letters from Tim

Dear Friends,

A reading proving that Jesus had a sense of humour.

‘Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgement you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck of sawdust in your neighbour’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?  Or how can you say to your neighbour, “Let me take the speck out of your eye”, while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour’s eye.’

                                                                                                     Matthew 7: 1 – 5,

And a reflection.

One morning I jumped into the car for a doctor’s appointment- running a bit late as usual. I figured with no delays I would only be ten minutes late – until I started the engine and watched the gasoline gauge hovering on empty. ‘WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON TO USE THIS CAR?!’  I yelled at the empty passenger seat. Now I was going to be very late. The car was running on fumes and so was I.

And then those words about the speck and the plank came to mind and that Holy Presence stole into the car. I looked over at the passenger seat. Jesus wasn’t sitting there, but I could hear Him laughing.

How many times had I pulled into our driveway with an empty tank for ‘whoever was next’ to deal with? I deflated like a popped balloon and arrived at the doctor’s office bemused and ready to be humble. But no worries – he was running forty minutes late so I was right on time.

It is hard to stay angry when you are laughing.

Peace

Tim
