Letters from Tim

Dear Friends,
At the beginning of the season of Lent, we watch and listen with horror at
the invasion of Ukraine, and the increasing suffering of the ordinary
people. As weapons are picked up in order to attack or defend in Ukraine,
so too are different weapons being used in many different ways.
At first sight some weapons may seem ineffective against bullets, bombs
and tanks. But the images of some of the confrontatons between citzens
and the invading forces are not without effect. Similarly, the praying for
those caught up in the crisis, the lighting of candles, the signing of
petions, the protest marches all have their impact.
The discussions about welcoming refugees from the war into this country
help focus on what we can do in the circumstances. The Sheffeld City of
Sanctuary website has informaton and suggestions of practical ways to
support the people of Ukraine.

When faced with the threat of violence, the threat of world war, so close
on the heels of a pandemic - which has played havoc with the mental and
physical health of us all - we might feel daunted, exhausted and in no
state to enter the Lenten season.
Perhaps it is exactly the right timing though. Lent is a time of testing our
resilience, our focus on God and the priorities of the kingdom in our
everyday lives. When so much is drawing our attention, our energy, and
making us fearful, what better time to seek the presence and promises of
God?
For some this may be in the scriptures, in worship, in music, or exercise, or
in meeting close friends. God knows what we need and will come to us as
we turn to him. Let us begin Lent in faith and trust.
Peace Tim
